Understanding Metrics on the Garmin Index Scale

I bought the Garmin Index Scale as a gift for someone, and when I tried it out, I realized I had no clue how to interpret any of the data that it collected. So I put together this handy cheat sheet courtesy of Google searches.

The Garmin Index Scale measures the following metrics:

Body Mass Index (BMI) – Body mass index is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. BMI is often used to estimate if a person is underweight or overweight.

Muscle Mass – Muscle mass is the total amount of mass attributed to muscle. It is measured in pounds, kilograms, or stones and pounds.

Bone Mass – Bone mass is the total amount of mass attributed to bone. It is measured in pounds, kilograms, or stones and pounds.

Body Fat Percentage  -Body fat percentage is the percentage of total mass attributed to fat, including essential fat and storage body fat. Essential body fat is required for basic health.

Water Percentage – Water percentage is the percentage of total mass attributed to fluid. This measurement can be used to indicate your level of hydration.

But what do they all mean? This page is a handy reference tool for interpreting all that data.

How is BMI interpreted for adults?

For adults 20 years old and older, BMI is interpreted using standard weight status categories. These categories are the same for men and women of all body types and ages.

The standard weight status categories associated with BMI ranges for adults are shown in the following table.

18.5 – 24.9 Normal or Healthy Weight
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight
30.0 and Above Obese

What is bone mass? (Applicable age 18 – 99)

This feature indicates the amount of bone (bone mineral level, calcium or other minerals) in the body. Research has shown that exercise and the development of muscle tissue are related to stronger, healthier bones. While bone structure is unlikely to make noticeable changes in a short period, it is important that you develop and maintain healthy bones by having a balanced diet and plenty of exercise. People worried about bone disease should consult their physician. People who suffer from osteoporosis or low bone densities due to advanced age, young age, pregnancy,hormonal treatment or other causes, may not get accurate estimations of their bone mass. Below is the result of estimated bone masses of persons aged 20 to 40, who are said to have the largest amounts of bone masses, by weight. (Source : Tanita Body Weight Science Institute)

Ideal Total Body Water Percentages

Different tissues in your body contain different amounts of water. For example, body fat contains approximately 10 percent water, while muscle is approximately 75 percent water. In general, men should have a total body water percentage between 50 and 65 percent, while the ideal range for women is between 45 and 60 percent.
